a Comedy
By Ivan Menchell
Directed by Deb Smith
August 13-29
Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husband's graves. Ida is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life, Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun, and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. He meets the widows while visiting his wife's grave. Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida. They are guilt stricken when this nearly breaks Ida's heart.

This play is the hilarious sequel to Exit the Body which TLP presented several years ago. It also takes place in rural Vermont where Crane Hammond, a suspense-mystery writer, and her country-hating secretary, Kate, rent the same house as before only to find it is the exchange point where a missing microdot containing plans for military installations is to be picked up by a spy at midnight. One of the agents arrives to capture the spy but when he suffers amnesia, it is left to Crane and Kate to find the spy and the microdot. Who is the spy? The Vermont sheriff, the society writer for the paper, the famous recluse who has come out of hiding to obtain the rights to Crane’s book, the forgetful and distracting older neighbor, the rugged country cook or the CIA agent himself? The finding of the microdot as well as the pinpointing of the spy is laced with witty dialogue and confusing situations. |
